If I use a VM, is there any risk to my actual computer?
VM or RDP - Which should I use?

Not a Pro Cracker but from what I believe it's not recommended. The cracking will be linked to your IP (unless vpn or other proxies) and the speed of the cracking will be slow to your VM as VPS have good bandwidth and internet speeds compared to your home isp. Not to mention, your computer will run very slowly.
Get a EDU email, cost almost nothing. (contact me if you can't find one) and get the github student package which gives you access to aws for about 6 months depending on how much you use it.

Internet is not an issue. I'm more concerned about my personal security and the risk of viruses in downloads.
