While Java is widely used and there are many jobs out there for it, utilizing this in a job setting requires knowing about other technologies that enable it to be used at a production level. Specifically, building deployable packages with dependencies is crucial for any non-trivial application. This means learning one or all of Ant, Maven and/or Gradle to handle this and create deployable packages and handle dependencies. Even just making Android applications will require knowing Maven3 to build the apk and handle dependencies. As has been mentioned, knowing about databases is also important since that's how data will likely be stored in a production application. While SQL is a good start and good to know, NoSQL solutions such as MongoDB, Reddis, and Cassandra are also quite popular and knowing even one of these can greatly expand job options. If you're not using one already, definitely start using and IDE such as IntelliJ or Eclipse as this will make development easier, save time, and with the right plugins for Ant/Maven/Gradle help with dependencies during the development and testing phases.

Got java job with only one small personal project on github and zero real experiences. So I think java is still quite popular, although python is becoming strong competitor on backend stage.

As an IT worker, I can say that java is one of the most used programmes. If you want to get a good and a high paid job, begin learning java, it will help you a lot. But the most important thing in programming is to study and to practice a lot, join new and interesting projects, talk to people from the field. I remember when I began my career in IT I was looking for internships in successful companies, where I could learn a lot. It wasn’t easy to be accepted for an internship, cause not all companies want to waste their time to teach you the work, but I found an internship offer suitable for me on city-internships.com and I had an amazing experience there. So, if you know java you have a lot of opportunities to get a great job just keep looking for it.

I wonder if it is?

Sure is, haven't found it useful yet but it eventually will.
